To continue with Bhutan's
peaceful transition of power, the Election Commission of Bhutan has just
announced the following dates for theupcoming 3rd National Assembly
elections:
September 15 - Primary Elections
October 18 - General Elections
There are four political parties contesting in the primary elections this
time:
1. Bhutan Kuenyam Party (President - Dasho Neten Zangmo)
2. Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (President - Dr. Lotay Tshering)
3. Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (President - Dr. Pema Gyamtsho)
4. People's Democratic Party (President - Dasho Tshering Tobgay)
As usual, two parties with the most votes will proceed on to the general
elections.
The People's Democratic Party and Druk Phuensum Tshogpa have completed
their 5-year term as government and opposition respectively, and there is
an interim government appointed by His Majesty the King at the
moment, headed by the Chief Justice.
The interim government will be dissolved once the new government
takesover, following the elections. The National Council (upper house)
elections were held earlier this year, and it has now begun a new term.
